Medieval dagger, France 14th century.

Dagger reproduction, made of metal with a removable plastic sheath.

The crossguard and pommel of the dagger bear an inscription in Vulgar Latin that means: “Guarded by a dragon that does not sleep, in the name of truth.”

The Middle Ages is the historical period of Western civilization, spanning from the 5th to the 15th century. Conventionally, it begins in 476 with the fall of the Western Roman Empire and ends in 1492 with the discovery of America.

Medieval knights were important figures during this time. Their weapons training included skills in handling the sword with both hands, the axe, the mace, the dagger, and the spear. A knight was expected to serve as a castle guard and support his feudal lord in wars.
