Flintlock pistols featured a flintlock that, when struck by the hammer, produced sparks that ignited the gunpowder. This type of weapon required manual reloading of ammunition after each shot. The ammunition, inserted through the muzzle, consisted of gunpowder, a shot, and a paper insert, which served as a plug to keep both components compressed in the barrel.

In battle, these weapons were usually used for a single shot, as reloading was very slow and there was often not enough time. Therefore, after firing, combatants had to draw their sabers or swords or use the pistol as a club, as circumstances did not allow for a timely reload.

In 1718, Tula was visited by Tsar Peter I the Great, who commissioned the oligarchic Demidov family to build Russia's first military equipment factory. A few decades later, the Demidov factory in Tula became the largest metalworking center in Eastern Europe.
